The minutes from the 2006 Annual General Meeting were distributed at the start of this meeting. The minutes were approved as written. Financial Report 2006-07 Wendy Turner presented the financial statements for the 2006-2007 year. A new bonspiel fund has been created for which any bonspiel surpluses or deficits would be accounted. This fund meets the needs of some of the contracts with our principal sponsors, whereby the TCA must demonstrate that sponsorship money is spent on the bonspiels. As this is the first year of the bonspiel fund, presentation of the financials is different from past years. Wendy moved that the financial statements be accepted as presented. Marilyn Parsons seconded. All in favour. Appointment of Auditor Murphy & Chung were the auditors of the TCAs financial statements. Wendy moved that we reappoint Murphy & Chung as auditors for the upcoming year. Louise Germain seconded. Passed. 2007 / 2008 Events Beth Woolnough, TCA director of Bonspiels, stated that there is a new sponsor for the Ladies and Business Women bonspiels Residence Retirement Group. Other highlights for the upcoming season: Curl TV wants to broadcast the Energizer Juniors bonspiel. Membership rates for Curl TV are $35. The Melitta Bonspiel of Champions will run April 5th and 6th although the poster states April 4th and 5th. The Melitta Bonspiel of Champions will have a prize of $4000 in cash for each winning team. The Business Women bonspiel is growing to 32 teams. Beth thanked Joanne Stewart for her efforts in promoting this event. All events are on track with reserved ice. Information packages on each event were presented. Beth thanked the volunteers for their efforts in the past season as well as the upcoming season. Jim Anderson stated that the chance for Juniors to be seen on Curl TV is a tremendous opportunity for the curlers. The Curl TV membership price of $35 price is low and the first telecast of Curl TV is scheduled for the upcoming weekend. TCA Lottery The tickets for this years Lottery were distributed to the club representatives. Ticket prices are the same as last year: 1 ticket for $2, 3 tickets for $5, and 15 tickets for $10. The profits fund Junior curling in the TCA, either through member clubs or the TCA. The draw will be held December 30th. Ron reminded clubs to return unsold books of tickets. Sold ticket stubs should be returned by early December. Ron thanked the clubs for last years efforts 19 clubs participated. Four clubs sold over 100 books each and one club sold 200 books. Over 1000 books were sold. Ticket sales were approximately $10,900 and raised $4400 for TCA clubs and $4500 for the TCA Juniors. The remainder of the money went to lottery costs. Marketing & Promotion A brochure was included in the club packages for Kids Help Phone. There is potential to work with Kids Help Phone to cosponsor bonspiels. Past Accomplishments & Future Goals The TCA has worked with the City of Toronto to encourage development of more curling ice in the city. The City will be conducting a study of curling facilities in the GTA and the needs of its citizens. The TCA encourages member clubs to complete this survey once forwarded by City representatives. The TCA hired a student to expand the functionality and look of the TCAs website, including an online bonspiel entry system, updated sponsor logos, and front page listing of club open houses. If there are any updates to the information on the websites, clubs should let Beth know and she will post. The website is the TCAs main marketing tool. Use of the website has allowed the TCA to eliminate draw sheets saving the committees considerable money that can be redirected to their bonspiels. Joanne thanked Hugh McCarrell for the assistance that he has provided in getting the bonspiels paperless. Ron discussed the mission statement for the TCA and its strategy. Ron presented a one page handout. Mission Statement: Ensure that curling clubs prosper and grow across the Greater Toronto Area. Milestones: 1 year: Strengthen relationship with OCA / Curl Ontario Communicate with HACA and OVCA on common issues Complete a survey of major club purchases (eg rocks, chiller equipment, etc) 3 years: Have commitments for one new curling club 5 years: Increase curling membership in GTA by 35% Plan for a world/national Junior event Become a key influencer within CCA Joint venture with OCA 10 years: Increase curling membership in GTA by 100% Increase diversity of curlers Add two new curling clubs in political boundaries of Toronto Plan for a national CCA event (Brier, Scotts, Olympic Trials) Ron presented the milestones as shown above. Wendy asked the audience to volunteer to the committees to make this happen. Election of Officers Three Executives are leaving the TCA B Paul Bourque director at large and former treasurer, Mike Rowley past president, and Wendy Turner past secretary and treasurer. Ron thanked each for their contributions. Ron Tolhurst presented the slate of officers nominated for election to the TCA executive. The slate includes Jim Anderson (Richmond Hill Curling Club), Blair Clemes (High Park Curling Club), Joe Corrado (Dixie), Ross Duggan (Scarboro Golf & Country Club), Paivi Liitela (Leaside), Delaine Payton (Scarboro), and Elizabeth Woolnough (Weston Golf & Country Club). Further nominations were asked of those in attendance, yet none was provided. Ron moved that nominations were closed, seconded by Marilyn. All in favour. Toronto 2009 Paul Boutilier, President of the World Curling Tour Players Association, and Wendy Kane, Director of Operations for Grand Slam Curling, presented the opportunity of a WCT event for Toronto. Highlights of their presentation: Discussions started a year to a year and a half ago. Meetings started 3 months ago. Running an event with Grand Slam. Inside Sport and CBC Sports are partners. This is a pre-Olympic event for the end of October 2009. The format will include the 9 international mens teams that have qualified for the Olympics, plus the four top Canadian teams that are exempt from the pre-trials. A Wednesday to Sunday format. CBC has agreed to provide the signal worldwide. There will be five legends teams that either won the Brier eg the Werenich, Hackner, etc. or other major event. Sponsorship is with the Canadian Masters, This is an opportunity for the TCA and Toronto curling clubs. There is a revenue sharing model with the Grand Slam of Curling. Ticket list price is estimated at $250 today the group is offering tickets to clubs at $150 for TCA members, of which $25 goes to the TCA and $25 goes to each club. 100% of costs and risks reside with Grand Slam. The goal is to leave a legacy in Toronto. Grand Slam has had meetings with the City and the Province the TCA was represented there. Reaction is positive from them as they see the opportunity for a pre-Olympics event. Discussions are ongoing with the World Curling Federation. There are 23 clubs in the TCA and 23 sections in the ACC. Each section will be named for a TCA club. The club atmosphere will be picked up by CBC. The launch is planned for the 3rd week of January 2008 in front of city hall on Nathan Phillips ice. Intend to have a base of tickets sold by the launch 23 clubs, 200 tickets (100 pairs) each 4600 seats sold for the launch. Then there would be about 6000 seats available for go live with season tickets. Tickets can be sold to anyone, as long as they are sold through the clubs. $75 down money would be distributed to the clubs and the TCA. 15 draws for $150 ticket. Tickets would stay at $150 for a period of time. Clubs can buy their tickets in their section for a limited time. 9203 seats in the ACCs lower bowl. The CCA will be running all events for the next three years in the west due to their financial situation. Within 30 days, posters and information should be available for the clubs. Information presented today will be available next week. The key piece for the city and the province is that the curling community is strongly supporting this. ACC is at use we can use the ice as we wish. City can offer marketing street pole signs, Don Valley signage, etc. Marketing is a joint effort TCA, Inside Sports and CBC.
